The quiet return of the tram — Urban Futures Quarterly · Paragraph A

Visitors arriving at Halbury’s central station in the spring of 2009 would have found little to suggest that the city had ever owned a tram. The rails had been torn up in 1957, when the council decided that buses were cheaper, more flexible and, above all, modern. Only a faded brass plaque outside the old depot recalled the network that had once carried sixty thousand passengers a day. Yet barely a decade later, Halbury’s Blue Line has become one of the busiest public-transport routes in the region, and delegations from other cities now travel there to find out how it was done.

1

Halbury’s trams were removed in 1957 partly because buses were seen as modern.

These papers are assessed by people in the real test. In Lingotivo you compare your work with a model answer and tick a checklist.

FAQ

Questions

Something else you want to know? Write to us.

support@lingotivo.com
Are these real IELTS papers?

No. Every paper is written by Lingotivo to follow the published format: the number of parts, passages, tasks and questions and the question types. They are practice material, not past papers.

Academic or General Training?

Academic. The Reading passages are academic texts and Writing Task 1 describes a chart or table. There is no General Training practice yet.

How many tests are there?

Four full mock tests, each with Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Do I get a band score?

Listening and Reading are scored out of 40. Lingotivo does not convert that to a band, and Writing and Speaking are self-assessed against a model answer and a checklist.

Can I also learn English there?

Yes. The English course has 56 grammar lessons from A1 to B1 and 2,789 everyday words read aloud, in the same account.

Can I practise on the web too?

Yes, right here on ielts.lingotivo.com. Log in with the account you use in the app, or start free in the browser: your course, your progress and Pro are the same in both.

Is it free?

You can start free: the first part of every word list and exam is open. Lingotivo Pro opens every lesson, word list and mock exam, in the app and on the web.
